Oak Leaf Hydrangeas Have Few Blooms

Question From: Valley, Alabama, United States
Q: I have some oak leaf hydrangeas that show no signs of blooms yet. I had two of my plants get blooms but the others are just getting taller and bushier. Can you give me some reason why no more blooms are not forming? Thank you for any inforrmation you can share with me on this problem.

A: Steve, The flower buds are formed on Oak Leaf Hydrangeas in late summer and fall of the previous year. They can be damaged by weather - unusual cold early or late in the season, eaten by deer (they love them) or removed by pruning in early spring. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
