Barrel Bin

Barrel Bin
Even a 55 gallon metal barrel can be converted into a holding bin for yard waste. It will hold about 6 bushels of organic material. It is best to replace the bottom of the barrel with wire mesh or a metal grille of some sort, to assure good drainage from the inside of the barrel. To assure good air circulation for the accumulated yard waste stored within, it will be necessary to punch holes in the sides of the barrel. They should be at least 1/2 inch in diameter and at least 6 to 10 inches apart all over the barrel. An alternative air supply can be fashioned by setting a PVC pipe, 1 or 2 inches in diameter and drilled with many air holes, in the center of the barrel. Dump organic material into the container around the pipe.
