Choices of Dill

‘Dukat’ also known as ‘Tetra’ is grown for its abundant foliage, which is perfect for salads. The seeds are great for seasoning various condiments. Sow this plant in clumps. This variety is considered a tender annual, so start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost and transplant young seedlings outdoors after all frost danger is well past.

Fernleaf Dill is a 1992 All America Selection winner. This unique dwarf dill reaches only 18 inches tall, so needs no staking. It is also slow to go to seed, which gives you more time to harvest leaves. Fernleaf dill is an excellent plant for container growing and looks great in flower arrangements.

Annual Herb. An easy-to-grow herb. Green or dried seed clusters are used primarily in making dill pickles. Fresh young leaves are used in flavoring salads, soups, meat and fish. The plant is highly aromatic and bears large, yellow flower heads. Harvest leaves just as the flowers open. To preserve leaves, dry them slowly at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. For seeds, hang clusters in warm, dry place with tray beneath to catch seeds. Sow seed directly in the garden in well-drained soil in a sunny location. Performs best in rows 9 inches apart. Thin plants to 9 inches apart when they are 2 inches tall. The seeds can be harvested when the lower part of a seed cluster is ripe.
