The Goldenrain tree is not a tree for the more northern parts of the country preferring zone 5B through zone 9. Goldenrain trees like full sun. They grow toward it if they are in shade. They appreciate decent soil, but are amazingly tolerant of poor soil (including alkaline soils) as well as drought, air pollution and wind. These trees plant and transplant amazingly easily in the spring; not in the fall. Young trees look a bit gaunt at first, but fill out quickly. Plant Goldenrain trees at least 15 or 20 feet from buildings or other trees. For more information see the file on Planting A Tree
