Region 4. Grass Choices in the Tropical South

With a year-round growing season, this region supports Bahia, Bermuda, centipede and zoysia grass. However, as you move south, St Augustine grass seems to be the best able to withstand the extreme heat.

Since warm weather grasses turn brown and go dormant in the relatively cooler Florida winters, homeowners who want to have green lawns during these months overseed their dormant turf with bentgrass, fine fescue, or annual ryegrass as a temporary turf.
