Planting Linden

Lindens grow best in full sun, but tolerate shade well. Most Lindens are able to handle winter cold as far north as the Canada border (zone 3) although some varieties are only good to zone 4. They prefer a well-drained soil that is neutral (pH 6.5 to 7.5) and they grow in almost any type of soil as long as it's kept slightly moist. . It can grow in clay soil better than most trees.

Lindens should be planted in the spring. Choose bare root trees that are from 5 1/2 to 10 feet tall. These trees are generally available at nurseries, and specimens as tall as 5 feet may be acquired. Lindens have coarse roots that grow deeply, but laterally, so they accept transplanting easily.
