Ashes are rapid-growing shade trees that are native to the United States. White Ash (Fraxinus americana) wood is tough and mostly straight grained and therefore useful, especially for baseball bats, tool handles and the like. Common in the East, it is used often in landscaping in that region, although green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica lanceolata) is the most widely distributed ash in North America.
