As they sip nectar from flowers, hummingbirds also get some animal protein.. All sorts of small insects enter flowers and get trapped in their structures and/or drown in their nectar. They are devoured hummers who, in this way, make a modest contribution to pest insect control in your yard. Anna’s hummingbirds eat more spiders and insects than any other hummer. Researchers are not yet sure if hummers feed insects to their young as many other backyard bird species do.
