Bacillus_thuringiensis for mosquitoes (variety israelensis) is commonly called “B.t.i”. This strain of the bacterium was found in Israel in 1976 and products containing this organism are effective against many species of mosquitoes.
It is available in slow-release formulations.
In one such product, the B.t.i. disperses from a biodegradable briquette that floats on the water where the mosquitoes breed. The larvae eat the B.t.i. and die. Other formulations are used to kill blackflies (biting gnats) as well.
